Small Kitchen Ideas

Small kitchens mean big problems when it comes to renovations and making everything fit. It can be your worst nightmare if you don’t have someone doing the work who really knows what he is doing.

You can make your small space fun and functional at the same time by using every ounce of space available to you. It does not matter that the area is small. You can still have a gourmet kitchen that will be the envy of all your friends.

You can take the counter area and put the cook top in the counter at the back of the room. The exhaust vent and fan should have a light in it and it should be able to become part of the décor. Perhaps doing the islands and the vent in stainless steel will give the room a surgical feel but it will also be contemporary and ultramodern. In front of the appliance area which houses the stove top, a small refrigerator, and an ultra modern glass vessel sink, a counter will be situated a few feet in front of that wall. The top will be covered in a beautiful marble or granite and can be used as a prep area as well as an eating area. In the counter there should be a pull out cutting board and prep area, several drawers for utensils and a cabinet area for pots and pan storage. You will have room for three stools for seating.

Adorn the wall with subway tiles in black and white and chrome. This will give the room a special feeling. The floor should be tiled in black and white marble tiles. When finished, you have a chef’s delight in a tiny package.

It does not matter if you only have galley space or if you have room for a full fledge kitchen. A small space can be made that will do everything you need for it to do. You can even use a closet to help the space be a little larger by putting a small apartment sized refrigerator at the bottom and microwave convection over on a shelf above it. No room for a cook top? Another shelf can be used to establish a two burner hot plate for cooking in pots or making tea. You can add more shelves within reach to house your coffee maker and toaster. It might not be a gourmet chef’s kitchen but it will do everything you need as long as you don’t mind your bathroom sink doubling as a dish washing space.

Last but not least, you can make your petite kitchen eco friendly. Being 'green' sometimes mean just painting your cabinets, changing the hardware and then making do with everything else in the room. Don’t throw out working appliances; just live with what you already have and jazz it up a bit. Go to thrift shops and consignment stores and find items that other people have tired of and use them in your “new” kitchen. If you do replace appliances do it with the new energy saving ones.
