Measure the floor space in your kitchen and know what room you have for things that need to be done. Do you plan to replace your appliances with new greener operating ones? Are you going to remove your old cabinets and replace them with new ones? Will you be adding an island or a peninsula? Do you plan to have an eat-in kitchen area?

Once you have basically decided what it is that you want to do, you can consult the kitchen department in a home store such as Lowes or Home Depot and, using their computer resources, plan your new kitchen. These stores have people that will do the complete renovation for you from start to finish. They will consult with you and help you to decide what will be the best use of your space. You will be able to choose from their complete cabinet selections and choose the ones that offer you the ability to store the items that you have in your kitchen.

No longer do you have to choose a bright yellow for your kitchen walls or decorate with café curtains decorated in chickens. Today’s kitchens are elegant and reflect the feeling of the rest of the house. Today’s kitchens might have an entire wall made of thick glass bricks to bring in the sunlight and shut out the stares of the neighbors. Add exposed beams to the ceiling and you have the beginning of a French country farmhouse kitchen. Add a built in wall oven made of decorative brick for baking pizza, a deep rectangular marble farm sink, and a double door refrigerator you are making headway. Perhaps you might build your cook top into a new center counter with warming drawers below or a space for a microwave convection oven. Innovative people have started putting a small vegetable prep sink into the counter near the cook top so that you can clean your vegetables and then begin to cook them.

Does your new kitchen really have a French farmhouse feel now? Perhaps you will want to include a wine refrigerator in one of the cabinets next to the back wall or will you want a small snack refrigerator drawer for your children to access? Shall we build in a refrigerated drawer under your cook top so that you can take your fresh meat out and cook it in one movement? New advances in refrigeration and in cooking make separate drawers for different things such as simmering, freezing, cooling, warming and other considerations to be spread out over different parts of the kitchen rather than just confined to a refrigerator stuck next to the wall.

Choose to eat at the long trestle table with benches instead of chairs or do your homework at the counter while you watch mom cook. The modern kitchen has many different styles; maybe you should make up your own.
