Choosing Kitchen Cabinets
Whether you are building a new home or simply remodeling your existing kitchen, the choices can be overwhelming. More than ever before the variety of colors, styles, and finishes is huge.
If you’re having a hard time making your selections, don’t worry. Most people find these choices difficult. Because the kitchen is the heart of the home, most people are justified in taking plenty of time to make design decisions they will appreciate for years to come.
An interesting trend in kitchen design is using more than one style of kitchen cabinets. The good news is that you don’t need to settle on just one style. Many designers are selecting one style for key cabinets –such as those which hold refrigerator – and eight different but complementary style for the remaining cabinet units. This allows the designer to draw attention to significant pieces while providing for a variety in the design.
Many people are returning to a painted style of kitchen cabinets. While many people think about an updated look from 1950s, today’s updated interpretation of painted cabinets is quite trendy.
Another important feature showing up in more and more kitchens are organizing units. Adding pullout drawers, extra shelves, and slide out bins allows for maximum use of space. In addition to building more space, many of today’s consumers want to make the best use of the space by adding storage features that provide for easy access to all of the items in the cabinets.
While everyone wants their kitchen to look great, an increasingly popular trend is for clean lines and basic designs. Giving so many of today’s problems –economic and otherwise –an overly ornate or fancy design style simply seems out of place. Another advantage to a simple design is that it remains in style for much longer period of time. Simple and clean lines are timeless.
A general and kitchen design principle that has been followed four years is the work triangle. This idea is to closely monitor the space between the sink, the refrigerator, and the oven or stovetop. Most designers selected cabinets to fill in between these three key spaces. Today however designers are considering other items beyond the traditional work triangle. Some high and refrigerators are splitting into multiple pieces. Some higher and kitchens include a small one cooler or beverage station. A small office note is increasingly popular. All of these adjustments to the work triangle in the appliances in our kitchen area mean very different choices for kitchen cabinets. Be sure to spend some time thinking about the types of appliances and areas you want to build and your kitchen. Then, think about the right set of cabinets to fill in between those spaces.
If all of these considerations seem like a lot of things to think about, it is because they are. For most kitchen project and it makes sense to work with a designer who can think through all of the choices that will best fit your lifestyle and your design goals. Experienced designers can consider the latest trends and options in cabinetry and how to fit them into your design goals and budget.
